Our six-hour nearshore trip on July 26 delivered solid action with grouper, cobia, and snook making up the day’s catch. While water clarity was less than one foot, the fish continued to feed well around the nearshore structure.
Bottom fishing produced quality grouper, while free-lined live pilchards and pinfish accounted for both cobia and snook. Even with reduced visibility, presenting lively natural baits proved to be the key to consistent bites.
The day featured sunshine mixed with passing clouds, creating comfortable conditions on the water. Anglers willing to fish live bait around productive structure were rewarded with a great variety of species.
With warm Gulf water temperatures holding steady, a variety of species remain active across the nearshore reefs and ledges. Live bait continues to outproduce artificial presentations, especially when fished around hard bottom, rock piles, and other structure where fish are staging throughout the morning.
If current conditions continue, anglers can expect more opportunities to target a mixed bag of nearshore species over the coming week.
