Sarasota Fishing Report

Summer settled into its familiar rhythm across Sarasota’s nearshore reefs this week, and with the annual tarpon migration largely behind us, we shifted our attention offshore in search of steady action. The decision paid off early as healthy reefs and hard-bottom areas produced a variety of quality fish throughout the morning.

Bottom fishing stayed consistent with keeper gag grouper and mangrove snapper holding tight to structure, while free-lined live baits around the edges gave us shots at cruising cobia. We also picked up a bonus kingfish that made a long, fast run before coming boatside, adding even more variety to an already productive trip.

Calm seas and light southwest winds made it easy to move between spots and stay on active fish. Water clarity remained good for mid-July, allowing us to fish a combination of artificial reefs and natural hard-bottom without spending much time searching for productive areas.

Live pilchards and pinfish accounted for nearly every quality fish brought aboard. Fishing fresh bait close to structure was the key to consistent bites, while staying mobile allowed us to take advantage of changing conditions instead of waiting for fish to come to us.

As we head toward late July, nearshore fishing should continue providing excellent opportunities for anglers looking to fill the cooler and enjoy steady action. Tarpon season may have slowed for now, but Sarasota’s summer fishery offers plenty of excitement with grouper, snapper, cobia, and other reef species keeping rods bent throughout the morning.
