A week after the full moon, Sarasota's tarpon fishery had clearly settled into its midsummer pattern. The massive schools that lined the beaches through June were no longer a common sight, but the fish that remained demanded attention. Fewer opportunities often mean bigger rewards this time of year, and every rolling tarpon had the potential to be a true giant. Rather than chasing every fish we spotted, we concentrated on areas where individual tarpon lingered around passes and deeper beach structure. These fish behaved differently than the migrating schools, often appearing without much warning before slipping back into deeper water. Patience became just as important as casting accuracy. The morning started with light southwest winds, warm Gulf water, and partly cloudy skies that kept visibility comfortable during the first few hours. As the sun climbed higher, we shifted our attention toward productive inshore structure where snook and redfish continued their dependable summer bite, giving the anglers steady action while staying ready for any tarpon opportunity that developed. Live crabs remained the best option whenever a tarpon presented itself, while free-lined pilchards produced quality snook around docks, mangrove shorelines, and deeper points. Adapting to changing conditions instead of forcing one pattern made the difference throughout the trip, and the variety kept everyone engaged from start to finish. As July continues, Sarasota's fishing becomes more about quality than quantity when it comes to tarpon. The migratory push has largely passed, but experienced anglers know some of the season's biggest fish can still be found by putting in the time. Combined with dependable snook, redfish, and other summer species, there's still plenty of reason to get on the water.
