Sarasota Fishing Report

The first week of July brought a familiar summer transition to Sarasota’s waters. While a few tarpon could still be found for anglers willing to put in the time, the large schools that dominated the beaches just a couple of weeks ago had become much less consistent after the full moon. Rather than chase scattered fish, we spent the morning putting our family on steady inshore action.

Mangrove shorelines, docks, and deeper grass edges all held fish early in the day. Snook provided the most exciting fights, while redfish and spotted sea trout kept the rods bending between larger bites. The variety made for an enjoyable trip, especially for anglers looking to stay busy rather than wait for one opportunity.

Warm Gulf water, light southwest winds, and clean morning conditions created another classic summer pattern. The best bite came before the midday heat settled in, with fish becoming more selective as boat traffic increased. Working areas with moving water continued to produce the most consistent action throughout the trip.

Live shrimp and free-lined pilchards accounted for nearly every fish brought to the boat. Simple, natural presentations around structure consistently outperformed artificial lures, and keeping fresh bait in the water was the key to steady action. Families and newer anglers especially enjoyed the fast pace that inshore fishing offers this time of year.

As we move deeper into July, our focus will continue shifting toward Sarasota’s dependable summer inshore fishery while keeping an eye out for resident tarpon and other seasonal opportunities. The beaches may have quieted after the full moon, but there is still plenty of excellent fishing available for anglers looking to spend a memorable morning on the water.
